Abstract

The long-term use of three-month injectable contraception is widely practiced among women of reproductive age; however, its hormonal content may contribute to increased blood pressure. Mild hypertension among injectable contraceptive acceptors is often overlooked and inadequately managed at the community level. This community service activity aimed to improve health literacy and empower women to utilize bay leaf (Syzygium polyanthum) decoction as a non-pharmacological approach to prevent and control mild hypertension. The activity employed a participatory-educative method involving health education sessions, demonstrations of herbal preparation, and assisted consumption of bay leaf decoction for seven consecutive days. Participants were 20 women using three-month injectable contraception with mild hypertension in Rurukan Sub-District. Blood pressure measurements were conducted before and after the intervention. The results showed a meaningful reduction in average systolic and diastolic blood pressure after the intervention, accompanied by high participant adherence and positive acceptance. This activity demonstrates that community-based herbal education using locally available plants can be an effective promotive and preventive strategy to support cardiovascular health among women of reproductive age. The program also strengthened participants’ skills and confidence in independently applying traditional health practices within their households.
